About legacy portraits
What are legacy portraits?
A legacy portrait is a painted portrait made to be kept and handed down. It preserves the likeness of someone you love, such as a parent, grandparent, spouse or a loved one who has passed, as a family heirloom that honors their life and connects the generations who come after.
What makes a picture a legacy picture?
A picture becomes a legacy picture when it is made to last and meant to be passed on. It captures a person, or a meaningful moment or chapter in a family's life, and it is printed, framed or displayed so that children and grandchildren can keep it, rather than left as a file on a phone.
What is legacy art?
Legacy art is artwork created to preserve family history and carry it forward. At Legacy Art Portraits, that means painting a photo you already have, even an old or faded one, into a portrait your family can print, frame and pass down.
Is a legacy portrait a physical print or a digital file?
Both are possible. You receive a high-quality file suitable for enlargements up to 16" × 20", which you can print as often as you like. If you prefer, we will upload the finished art to a password-protected page in our Fine Art America gallery, where you can order it as a framed print or a canvas, ready to hang.
Ordering & payment
What do I receive?
You receive completed custom painted digital artwork by email after approving a preliminary proof. The delivered file is high quality and suitable for enlargements up to 16" × 20". The image file belongs to you, and you may make as many prints as you want.
How much does a portrait cost?
One person is $179 and two people is $249. Pet portraits are $79 for one animal, or $99 for two animals or a horse with rider. See the pricing page for details.
When do I pay?
No payment is due when you submit the request form. After we review your photo and confirm it is good enough to work from, we email an invoice for online payment.
Do you offer pricing for professional photographers?
Yes. Professional photographers who order direct receive special pricing, so they can offer painted portraits from their wedding, family, children's, senior and business portrait sessions. Add your business or studio name to the order form and the discount is applied to your invoice. Portraits are delivered unbranded to your business, we never contact your client, and we do not recommend more than two people in a painting. See photographer pricing.
Can I request changes?
Yes. You can request changes after reviewing the preliminary proof.
Photos & subjects
What kind of photo works best?
A clear, well-lit photo with a visible face works best. A photo on your phone, an old print or a picture saved in a folder for years can all work. Black-and-white, old, faded, or imperfect photos may also work, but final quality depends heavily on the source image.
Can you include more than two people?
More than two people is not recommended. Larger groups usually reduce detail, intimacy, and overall impact.
Do you paint pets?
Yes. Dogs, cats, horses and other companions are painted the same way. See the pet portrait gallery.
Will my pet photo be cropped?
Full-body photos may be cropped when a head-and-shoulders portrait gives the animal more character and emotional impact. Horses and action scenes may remain wider when the full pose matters.
Timing & delivery
How long does it take?
Turnaround time is usually about 3–5 days after the order details and photo are received. It may take longer before major holidays.
Are rush orders available?
Rush orders may be available for an additional 50% charge, but you need to inquire first so timing can be confirmed.
Can I have it framed?
Yes. At your request, we will upload the art to a password-protected page in our gallery on Fine Art America. From there, you have unlimited framing options, including framed prints and canvas.
